Operator Alerts is a tool to integrate external content into the Agent Console. Operator Alerts can also be customized to create a seamless integration with external services such as CRM systems or provide built-in tools for your agents. Providing such integration saves time because it removes the need to toggle between screens and applications during the chat. As agents usually need to take concurrent chats, this expedites their job and helps them keep focused on the interaction with the visitors. For example, you can embed a form that displays selected variables that are passed from a CRM system to the Alerts tab in the Agent Console.
For more information on Operator Alerts, refer to the following knowledgbase articles:
Typing on a computer keyboard is very different than typing from a mobile device. Because of this there are some less than desired impacts on your chat deployment.
Some include:
Longer Chat Times
Longer Chat Times = Less Queue Capacity (Chats per labor hour, less conversions per labor hour)
Increased customer frustration related to the time it takes to respond from a mobile device.
Despite these challenges, visitors still want to chat. Here are a few tips & recommendations to help improve the visitor experience and shorten chat times.
Only make chat availablewhenchatisavailable. Click Here (requires login & registration is free) for an article in the LivePerson Developer community that explains how to check for agent availability.
Build Pre-Chat Questions toSet The Tone
Simply opening an open chat dialogue from a mobile device leaves your visitor with the burden of introducing the topic they wish to speak about. You can ease that burden by creating leading questions that narrow the topics. These questions/topics can be passed as custom variables to the chat operator.
Example: You have a mobile site that sells floral arrangements, gift baskets and candy. To help guide the conversation you can narrow the topics by asking leading questions when a visitor wants to chat.
Click Here for REST Chat API Reference on passing variables.
Make Agents Aware They Are Taking A Mobile Chat versus a Web Based Chat
You will want to know the difference between mobile & traditional web based chats. Here are a couple of quick ways to set that up.
Establish a 'Mobile' or 'App Specific' skill. Ex. mobile-chat-sales-english
Create an Alert Rule via your LivePerson account for your chat agents
Ex. When Chat is Established--> If the visitor's skill group is 'mobile-chat-sales-english' add a 'Mobile Chat' operator alert for this visitor.
By doing so you chat agents will know to handle these chats differently than a traditional web based chat.
Train Agents to Handle Mobile Chats Differently
When Chat Agents can identify that the person they are chatting with is a mobile device user they should treat the chat differently. Set the expectation with your agents that they have to make the extra effort to Understand The Customer. Here are some quick recommendations:
Ask leading questions that require "Yes/No" responses. Ex. "Would you like your gift basket delivered on Thursday afternoon or Friday morning? "
Create a canned response tree only for mobile chats to avoid confusing web based with mobile based responses.
Send Mobile URL's to Mobile Users! If your chat agents use canned responses and send URLs to customers to help show them different products it makes sense to do the same with your mobile customers, however, you should send them links to your mobile pages not your traditional web pages. Nothing will devolve a sales chat into a troubleshooting faster than sending a traditional web based URL. Here are some thoughts:
Create an inventory of your mobile URLs to include in canned responses.
If you send visitors to mobile pages, create a button/link that takes them back into the chat interface from the mobile page. Sending a visitor out of the chat window into their mobile web browser requires them to have the ability to switch back to the chat interface. By not creating an easy link back to the chat interface so you run the risk of abandoned chats and unnecessarily increasing the overall length of the chat.
Combine these elements into your mobile chat strategy and you should be well on your way to creating a positive customer experience!
In today's DTOD we will cover Live Key & Plug-In Approvals
Once you have concluded the development phase of your application, a Live Key will allow you to use your application with your Live account.
Live Key Prerequisites:
Let's begin with a quick overview of the prerequisites needed in order to obtain a Live Key.
Live Keys are approved only for active LivePerson accounts and are subject to licensing fees. In addition, Live Keys are only available with select LivePerson product lines. (Please contact your LivePerson account executive for more details as needed.)
If you are a partner requesting a Live Key on behalf of a customer and/or for your application, you must be an active Platform Partner. (For more details, please contact partners@liveperson.com)
Requesting a Live Key:
Follow the easy steps below to submit your Live Key request:
First, you will have to register and login to the community. Once logged in, mouse over Resources > API Keys & Accounts > Create New Application Key. Please fill all the fields as required.
Live Key & Plug-In Approvals:
LivePerson reviews your application and if acceptable a Live Application Key is made available. A LivePerson representative may contact you during this stage. Please allow up to 2 business days for Live Key approval. For Plug-Ins, please allow up to 5 business days to review the XML code.
If you would like to receive more update on what's new in the Developer Community, see this thread on how to subscribe to the community's email notifications and stay up-to-date.
In today's DTOD we will cover two of the most common issues our developers have encountered regarding TimeStamp Authentication in Oath.
API Rest Based Signed Request : Server / Client time synchronization
Problem: It is possible that there will be a difference between the current time (UTC) set on the client consuming the LivePerson APIs and the server providing them. If the difference is substantial, the server will reject the request.
Solution: It is possible to overcome this by making sure the discrepancy is eliminated on the client. Simply calculate the time deviation by subtracting the value in the “Date” header of the response you received from the request to the API base URL and multiply by -1. The value you get from this calculation add to the timestamp value (“oauth_timestamp”) you send as part of the next requests you make to the API server. Note, that cases where there is a delay between sending the initial request and receiving its response can result in this solution still not fixing the issue, in that case you may wish to use the “Date” header of the error response sent from the server to calibrate the timestamp again and reissue the request.
API Rest Based Signed Request : Signature Encoding
Problem:
You send requests to the API server and sometimes they go through and sometimes you get a signature invalid error.
Solution:
You need to URL encode the signature header (“oauth_signature”) using RFC-3986 so there aren’t any characters in there like the ‘+’ sign. These are the allowed characters: "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ0123456789-_.~", any other character must be correctly encoded.
An application is a solution that is built on top of the LivePerson platform, and is added to an account to provide extra value. Applications are developed using LivePerson’s Open Platform architecture.
This document explains the steps required for you to work in the development environment, from requesting an Application Key, building the application, testing it in the development environment and then making it available to live accounts. The figure below illustrates the basic steps for developing API and plug-in applications.
Developing an Application
Follow these steps to develop your application:
1. Register as a Developer: Click the Register link to create an account to access the LivePerson Developer Community.
2. Create an Application Key: From the Resources menu, point to API Keys & Accounts and the select Create New Application Key. This key is used to identify every application that is developed. To develop a LivePerson application you must first receive a unique Application Key from the LivePerson Developer Community, and then include it in every request. The following page is displayed.
Note:When creating an initial Application Key, select Development in the Purpose field to indicate that this key is for development or testing purposes.
You can select the following types of APIs:
Agent API (Signed REST)
Create agent chat applications from any desktop, mobile device or server-based software application. These applications enable agents (real or virtual) to log into their LivePerson account, take chats from visitors and to transfer chats to other agents. LivePerson recommends that agent chat applications should be signed. For more information, refer to Agent API Reference and OAuth for Signed REST Communication.
Application Plug-Ins
LivePerson plug-ins are application components of packaged business rules. Use plug-ins to create intelligence solutions that respond to visitor events and interact with the visitor's browser or with third-party systems. For more information, refer to Getting Started with Plug-Ins.
Create chat sessions using Signed API calls. Access is restricted to applications that use the OAuth standard to authenticate against the LivePerson platform, and which have been granted explicit access by the account owner. For more information, refer to REST Overview, REST Chat API Reference and OAuth for Signed REST Communication.
Chat API (Unsigned REST)
Create chat sessions using unsigned API calls. Applications using the Unsigned REST Chat API may only access specific accounts that are approved during the Application Key request process. In addition, those accounts should allow unsigned API calls. For more information, refer to Building a RESTful Chat.
Visit API (Signed REST)
Monitor the activities of your visitors beyond your website -- on a wide range of devices, applications and websites (as long as they use HTTP requests) -- such as mobile devices, social media websites and desktop applications. In addition, you can use the Visit API to add custom variables to existing, monitored website visits. Access is restricted to applications which use the OAuth standard to authenticate against the LivePerson platform, and which have been granted explicit access by the account owner. For more information, refer to REST Visit API Reference and OAuth for Signed REST Communication.
Visit API (Unsigned REST)
Monitor the activities of your visitors beyond your website -- on a wide range of devices, applications and websites (as long as they use HTTP requests) -- such as mobile devices, social media websites and desktop applications. In addition, you can use the Visit API to add custom variables to existing, monitored website visits. For more information, refer to REST Visit API Reference.
Notes:
An application can consist of a single plug-in and multiple APIs.
Unsigned APIs should only be used if signed API calls are not possible. Signed API calls are not possible in scenarios where Secrets cannot be kept secured (such as in Script languages or binaries where Secrets can be uncovered and compromised).
Starting from the Summer 2011 release, both signed and unsigned applications need to be installed. Unsigned applications are installed in the same way as signed applications, will be visible in the Manage tab in the Admin Console and the account owner will not need to change the account’s security setting to allow unsigned applications. LivePerson conforms to backward compatibility standards, therefore existing applications will continue to work as they did before.
3. Develop the Application: Depending on whether you are developing an API or a plug-in the required steps vary as follows:
API: Develop the application on your computer.
Plug-In: In order to develop a plug-in you require a Developer Account. (This is in addition to the Test Account, which is described below). Obtaining a Developer Account displays additional tabs within the Admin Console, where you develop your plug-in.
4. Request a Test Account: From the Resources menu, point to API Keys & Accounts, select Create New Account and then select the type of account you require. You can create Small Business and Midsize Business test accounts. A Test Account starts off in a “clean” environment, which means that there are no existing rules. You will then be able to add further applications to the Test Account to see how they operate in this controlled environment. If you would like to create visitor traffic for a test account you need to create a website and deploy the Monitor Tag, just like any account owner would. Please refer to the LivePerson manuals for information on deploying the Monitor Code.
5. Install the Application on the Test Account: After developing your application, you will need to add the application to your account so that the application can be tested. From the Resources menu, point to API Keys & Accounts and the select View My Applications. Click the Install in Account link.
The Admin Console Login page is displayed.
Enter your login credentials and click Log In. Follow the instructions to add the application to your account.
You are then redirected to the application’s approval page in the Admin Console, where you will need to approve the application and grant it access to the account. An example is displayed below.
Select the I have read and agree to the terms check box and click the Approve button. The following page is displayed.
Note: If you are installing a signed application a Verification Code, which includes the Access Token and Secret is also displayed. For more information on signing applications, refer to OAuth for Signed REST Communication.
The installed applications are displayed in the Account Set Up> Applications> Manage (tab). After your application goes live, the account owner will follow a similar procedure to add applications to their accounts.
When you have finished testing your application it is ready to be used in Live Accounts, you need to request a Live Application Key.
Making the Application Available to Live Accounts
Important Notice:Live API Keys are approved only for active customers and subject to additional fees. Please contact your LivePerson account executive for more details. If you are a partner requesting a Live Key on behalf of a customer and/or for your application, you must be an active Platform Partner. For more details, please contactpartners@liveperson.com
Follow these steps to make your application available to Live Accounts:
1. Request a Live Application Key: From the Resources menu, point to API Keys & Accounts and the select Create New Application Key. This is a similar process to obtaining a Development Application Key. The following page is displayed.
Notes:When creating a Live Application Key, select Live in the Purpose field. For unsigned applications such as JavaScript, the Live Application Key must be requested for a specific LivePerson account number. Enter the account number in the LivePerson Account Number field.

5.Update the Application with the Live Key: Change the key used in your application to the new Live Key, depending on the type of application you developed:
Unsigned APIs: You need to copy the Install in Account link (see example below) in the Application Keys section and send it to the account owner. After the account owner logs in to their LivePerson account, they will need to grant access to the application.
Signed APIs: You need to copy the Install in Account link (see example below) in the Application Keys section and send it to the account owner. After the account owner logs in to their LivePerson account, they will need to grant access to the application. They will receive the access token and secret for your application and will send it to you. You should use this information as part of the signing process.
Plug-Ins: Upload the plug-in again in your Dev account. Once uploaded, LivePerson will need to approve the plug-in. Once the plug-in is approved, copy the Install in Account link (see example below) in the Application Keys section and send it to the account owner. After the account owner logs in to their LivePerson account, they will need to grant access to the application.
